“THIS MEMOIR,” Stone said. “You’ll have to put a stop to it. I refuse to let you abuse my reputation.” He was direct about his demands, you had to give him that.

Rio was punchy. No wonder. Stone and his daughter had tag-teamed him. Good cop, bad cop. Some sugar from Lissy, a lot of sting from Stone.

He breathed deeply, sticking to his decision not to rub the man’s nose in his own mess. For the moment. But he couldn’t go without comment on Stone’s hypocrisy. “So even after all this time you’re still concerned about your reputation. What about my mother’s?”

“Boy, you don’t know what went on there.”

“You took advantage of her loneliness.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Rio didn’t care to find out what had drawn his mother to Stone. But he had gained enough maturity to allow that the benefits of the affair might not have been as one-sided as he’d once supposed. No one knew better than he that you could keep on loving someone even after incontrovertible proof that they were no good for you.

“Whatever happened, she was the one who suffered. You continued as if nothing had occurred.”

Stone got huffy. “Ginny never suffered! I saw to that.”

“Keeping her on salary as a housekeeper? Big of you.”

“I was generous.”

“She worked hard. Still does.”

“I’ve offered her a retirement package. A generous one.”

That was news. But Rio didn’t want to give the man any credit. “Time to clear the decks?”

“I’m getting older.”

Not dying, Rio told himself, refusing to admit the pang of regret he felt at the idea that there’d never be any kind of forgiveness or understanding between them. And that would also be his own fault, especially after the book.

Don’t weaken now. Rio’s gut tightened. Even though Stone had aged, he’d always been healthy as a horse. He probably believed that he was entitled to live forever.

“It’s time to consider my legacy.” Stone looked at Rio balefully.

He returned the stare. Wondering if the hint of inheritance was supposed to cow him into obedience.

“You see, I have an image to protect,” Stone continued. “Your book could tarnish that.”

Cry me a river.
